Roderick D. Gillis
1921 - 2012
Roderick Daniel Gillis, 91, of Findlay died peacefully at his home after a short illness on the morning of September 9, 2012. Rod was born on July 29, 1921, in Cuyahoga County, Ohio to Roderick Daniel Gillis Sr. and Elizabeth Wohner Gillis. On March 4, 1944, he married Rita Jean Snyder and she preceded him in death on March 19, 2007. He is survived by a daughter, Julie Ann and son-in-law James Richard Robertson of Findlay, Ohio; three grandchildren, James Gillis Robertson (Betsy), Findlay,Ohio, Kevin Jon Robertson (Anita), Rocky River, Ohio and Elisabeth Julie Bova (Craig), Summerville, South Carolina. Rod was blessed with eight great grandchildren, James Clayton Robertson, Hannah Elisabeth Robertson, Maclain Daniel Robertson, Sarah Shin Robertson, Nathan Shin Robertson, Samantha Shin Robertson, Lucille Elisabeth Bova, and Eloise Marie Bova. He had three sisters, Rita M. Gillis of San Diego, California and Catherine E. Gillis of Middleburg Heights, Ohio and Patricia Gillis McLeod (deceased). Rod graduated from Edgewood High School 1939 in Ashtabula, Ohio and attended The Ohio State University. He enlisted in the Army in February of 1941 and played polo while serving with one of the last U.S. Cavalry units stationed in California. He was transferred to the infantry he trained with and shipped to the European theater of WWII with the 102nd infantry division in 1944 and 1945 achieving the rank of sergeant. After the war Rod worked for Essex Wire in Zanesville then was with RCA in Cambridge and Findlay until he retired to Fairfield Glade, Tennessee in 1985. Rod enjoyed golfing, woodworking, volunteering and socializing with a wonderful group of friends. He worked as a greenskeeper and was a Volunteer Fireman. Rod and Rita were members of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Rod returned to Findlay in 2010 and enjoyed family, gardening, reading, cooking and beating everyone at cards. A Memorial Mass at St. Michaelís Catholic Church (Bright Road) will be held Friday, September 21, 2012, at 1:30 p.m. All arrangements entrusted and handled by COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, Findlay.
