Donald E. Guthrie
1946 - 2012
Donald E. Guthrie, 66, of Findlay, died at 9:35 a.m. on Sunday, July 1, 2012, at the Hospice Care Center. He was born on February 18, 1946, in Findlay, to Betty (Bates) VanHorn, and was adopted and raised by Charles "Babe" and Mary Guthrie, and they also preceded him in death. He married Kimberly (Ansel) on March 1, 1997, and she survives. Also surviving are his children: Dawn (Sonja) Guthrie of Spring Hill, FL, Diana (David) Black of Spring Hill, FL, Joseph (Cheri) Moro of Findlay and Sheri Wilcox of Findlay; his beautiful grandchildren: Lynn, Samantha, Victoria, Annie, Donald and Alexander. Don retired as a manager of Fuel Mart, but anyone who knew him, knew he would not retire until now, as he always had a project going on. During his retirement he ran the Eagle Corn gift shop. He repaired and sold a lot of bicycles in that last few years. Don was a very generous man with a heart of gold, no child was ever treated any different. He believed that every child should have a bicycle, even if their parents were not able to afford much. He would never let anyone do without if he could help. He was a man of his word, which meant if you shook hands it was a done deal. He believed in morals that do not always exist in today's world. He was a very honest and hard working man. Until the cancer took him from us, you could not keep him down. We are thankful to the lord for giving us the extra time we all had to spend with him. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, July 5, 2012, at COLDREN-CRATES FUNERAL HOME, with Pastor Laurie Beaty officiating. Burial will be in Van Horn Cemetery, Amanda Township. Visitation will be held 2 hours (11 a.m.- 1 p.m.) prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in care of Coldren-Crates Funeral Home. | As a small child growing up on the corner of Bernard Avenue and Parkside Place I must say that Mr Guthrie always was an imposing figure to my little eyes His little girls were 2 of my very first friends Diana and I played for long hours together between her house on Parkside and mine However play time always abruptly ended when Mr Guthrie would pull in to his driveway from work The girls would run to greet him and I would panic Imagine a 4 year old in a panic He would come in to the house and flash that awesome grin I say awesome now because as an adult now looking back - he had quite a nice smile but I also recall a gold tooth I was so scared when he would flash that smile I ran 50mph back home every time I think he got a kick out of it He'd yell after me Donna - you don't have to go home I wonder if he ever found out why I ran home Anyway - one of my first memories was of Mr Guthrie and his gold tooth Dawn and Diana please accept my sympathy for the loss of your dad May he rest in peace |
